With the rise of AI in digital media, online shopping has started to look a lot different, especially on platforms like TikTok. One trend I’ve noticed more and more is the use of AI-generated or heavily edited product ads that do not fully reflect what’s actually being sold.

At first glance, these ads look completely legitimate. The products appear high-quality, unique, and visually appealing. But after seeing reviews and real customer experiences, it becomes clear that what people receive often looks very different—cheaper materials, altered designs, or lower overall quality.

How This Works

These ads are designed to grab attention and drive quick purchases. Sellers use AI-generated images or enhanced visuals to create an ideal version of a product—something that looks better than it actually is.

What makes this convincing is:

  • The account may have followers and engagement
  • The content looks polished and professional
  • The product appears realistic at a quick glance

Because of this, its easy to trust what you’re seeing without questioning it.

Why It’s Misleading

The main goal is simple: Increase sales.

By showing a more attractive or perfected version of a product, sellers can influence buyers to make quick decisions. This becomes a form of digital manipulation because the visuals do not accurately represent reality.

How I Handle It

After seeing how common this is, I’ve become much more cautious with online ads.

When I come across something that seems questionable, I:

  • Check the comments for real customer feedback
  • Look up reviews outside of TikTok
  • Scroll through the sellers profile for consistency
  • Avoid purchasing if anything seems off

How You Can Tell If It’s Fake

If you come across similar ads, here are a few ways to protect yourself:

  • Look closely at images: AI-generated visuals often have small inconsistencies
  • Check Reviews: Do not rely on just what’s shown in the ad
  • Research the seller: Look for the account on other platforms
  • Be skeptical of “too perfect” products: If it looks unrealistically good, it might be

As AI continues to grow, it is becoming harder to tell what is real and what isn’t online. Experiences like this highlight the importance of staying aware and thinking critically before making purchases.

Being a smart consumer isn’t just about finding good deals—it’s about recognizing when something might not be what it seems.

    I’m glad this is getting the attention it needs! I’m so tired of seeing these scams. Everyday it becomes increasingly difficult to identify whats real and whats fake. I worry about the older generations being taken advantage of by these AI scams. Keep doing the good work!!

    This is quite a well written piece to show that AI is effecting our generations. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter all use intensive AI, and what you wrote shows how It’s advertised to adults and young children, and again, how it’s effecting our generations. Great work!!🫶🫶
